Dutch TNO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Toegepast Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek), applied research organization , has announced its investment in the Irish quantum computing startup, Equal1 Ltd. Based in Dublin, Equal1 is pioneering the development of full-stack quantum computers with an AI layer that utilises semiconductor technology.
Equal1’s innovative approach centres around the use of silicon spin qubits, a cutting-edge technology co-developed by TNO and Delft University of Technology. Founded in 2018 as a spin-off from University College Dublin, Equal1 has grown to employ around 45 people. The company’s goal is to build powerful quantum computers capable of scaling to millions of qubits, potentially transforming various industries, including artificial intelligence and cryptography.
TNO, headquartered in the House of Quantum—a key hub for quantum technology research—provides Equal1 with invaluable access to an extensive network of quantum research experts and state-of-the-art equipment. The investment marks a significant step for TNO as part of their broader strategy to support promising deep-tech startups and scale-ups, while simultaneously reinforcing the Dutch high-tech ecosystem.
Tjark Tjin-A-Tsoi, CEO of TNO, expressed his enthusiasm for the investment, stating, “This investment in Equal1 is a first tangible illustration of our new strategy to support promising deep-tech startups and scale-ups, strengthening the Dutch high-tech ecosystem. Through this partnership, TNO is helping companies to make a global impact more quickly, contributing to the growth of the Dutch economy, accelerating technological transitions, and creating job opportunities.”
Equal1’s CEO, Jason Lynch, welcomed the investment, saying, “TNO’s support accelerates our vision to build rack-mounted quantum computers capable of scaling to millions of high-performance qubits on a single quantum chip. This partnership will bring us closer to delivering transformative solutions to the global quantum computing market.”
Quantum computing holds immense potential for solving complex problems that are beyond the reach of current classical computers, including optimising logistics, improving drug discovery, and advancing AI capabilities. Equal1’s work represents a promising step forward in this rapidly evolving field, with the potential to disrupt industries across the globe.
